War Thunder has pulled players into its tanks, planes, and ships since 2013 on the strength of one loop: spot the enemy first, land the shot that actually penetrates, and survive the return fire. We built a free browser version of the tank side of that loop called Steel Horizon. No client to install, no hangar to grind through, no matchmaking queue. How to play
On desktop, W and S drive forward and back, A and D turn the hull, the mouse aims the turret (click the canvas to lock the pointer, or just drag if your browser declines), and a click or the space bar fires. On phones, the left pad drives and steers while dragging anywhere on the right side of the screen swings the turret independently of the hull, and the FIRE button sends a shell wherever you’re aimed. If your shot has no target in range, the game tells you outright instead of leaving you guessing why nothing happened.
Terrain matters here: low hills and scattered rocks block sightlines as much as they block shots, so the same ridge that hides you from one tank can also block your own barrel. Each round runs up to two minutes against two to four AI tanks that patrol and re-engage, with a fresh one rolling in shortly after you knock one out. Score comes from every kill, your best score for the day saves to this device, and a destroyed tank or an empty clock just means tapping Roll out again for a new run on the same map.
How Steel Horizon compares to War Thunder
Steel Horizon keeps the part of War Thunder’s ground battles that actually creates tension: a turret that aims independently of the hull, terrain that hides you as much as it exposes you, and the short window between spotting a target and landing the shot before it lands one on you. The hills and rock cover here genuinely block shells, so working the high ground instead of driving straight at the enemy line pays off just like it does in the real game.
What it drops is everything that makes War Thunder a live game with a decade of content behind it: no historical vehicle trees spanning nations and eras, no aircraft or naval battles, no armor penetration modeling by shell type and impact angle, no crew skills or vehicle research, and no matchmaking against other players. There’s one tank, one arena per day, and AI opponents instead of a battlefield full of humans. We also flattened the damage model to a straightforward health bar rather than simulating War Thunder’s component-by-component damage, since a page that has to load in three seconds was never going to reproduce a physics-driven ballistics engine.
Treat Steel Horizon as a two-minute taste of the aim-and-cover skill that makes tank battles satisfying, not a substitute for a full realistic-mode match with a squad. If the loop clicks, the real thing is one tab away.
